Posted 12-29-05 12:15 AM Gosh Folio, you are an impresive resource of Nelson sock knowledge.
We recently adopted a well-loved vintage monkey that has the name Nelson on the sock, near the toe. You can see it under his right eye and back of his hat. I was wondering if that helps date him? Poor fella has been well-loved in his day and could use a little stuffing lift, although usually I leave them as the grandma made them. He's smaller than most of our residents. We don't know his name yet.

Posted 12-29-05 04:56 AM Fascinating, the Girl. Simply fascinating. I must admit ignorance to the "Nelson" stamping and what it means for your new charge's age. These new tidbits of information are exactly what makes the Red Heel Message Board such a major advance in communication for sock monkeys and their enthusiasts.
I wonder if anyone else on the board knows anything about Nelson stamped socks?
And I also wonder what it says below Nelson in the second photograph.
I shall study your monkey's photo and get back to you on a possible age.
Thanks for another piece to the puzzle. We shall learn how to make it fit.
Folio.

Posted 12-30-05 04:18 AM Thanks for the input Folio. Your comments prompted me to examine the back of the hat more closely. I snipped a couple of threads that were holding the rolled edge in place so I could read further, and I think it says seconds. So it seems that our new little friend is an authentic Nelson second, which might help pinpoint his age. I'm guessing that the practice of selling seconds probably started later in the 20th century. Poor guy could really use a cleaning--he looks older.
I think he has great ears. I can never get my ears that nice or even. They are single fabric thickness, gathered where they attach at the head, and rolled on the outer side. If anyone has any hints on how to make those, I'd love to know.

Posted 12-30-05 09:49 AM He does indeed have excellent ears, the Girls. In sockosimian studies we refer to them as "shells". The basic monkey ear shapes are flaps, rounds, shells, shaped, and, less commonly, Tibetan Ear Handles. Of course there are exceptions and variations w/i categories.
Good work on discovering that your new monkey's name is Seconds.

Oh, I don't think we can call him "seconds" as a name, because I'm afraid of what it might do to his self esteeem. In this Smonkey shelter we strive to rebuild the delicate psyche of sock monkeys who have often been through traumatic emotional circumstances.
Another recent refugee we rescued through the GBay adoption service was described by his former human companion as a "fat, bald, ugly sock monkey with big ears." I shudder to imagine what his life must have been like in that home. It's a wonder they didn't pay for a subtitle to add "stupid, smelly, and cheats at cards".
He was a little meek when he first arrived, but after weeks of positive affirmations from everyone, he's become a happy, thriving member of our community. Really quite clever and handsome too. We've given him some clothes that make his stuffing look proportionate to his height and when he's not helping Scout read his compass or Jackson tune his guitars, he's helping out the girl monkeys with all of their projects.
So our new little friend is going to need a more encouraging name. Something that doesn't imply he's anything less than the other monkeys. Perhaps when he recovers from the shell-shock of traveling through the postal system during Christmas shipping he will tell us what they used to call him.

Posted 12-30-05 05:15 PM I have the same ears!
As a matter of fact, my mouth used to look like that too.
I would almost think we were related except that I am of a finer weave and my eye is more minimalistic.
What's he stuffed with?

Posted 12-30-05 05:39 PM Perhaps he's a long lost brother or cousin? He came from Oklahoma, which isn't too far away from SHFL. His left eye thread is really loose, causing the button to flop a bit, so if I don't mend that pronto, he may have your pirate look soon.
I *think* he may be stuffed with that foam that gets crunchy because while mostly he's soft, I feel a little bit of semi-crunch in areas. That could also explain why he's shrinking away. I thought this weekend I might take a peek. If he's going to get stuffing rot, it might be kinder to replace it sooner. That would make it easier to get him cleaned up, but I'm not inclined to perform any unnecessary surgery.

Posted 12-31-05 08:30 PM No, he doesn't have any crinkly noise. It's just small little bits that fit between my fingers and feel a little crunchy.

Posted 02-19-06 02:25 PM Wow, your new friends are so cute! It's nice to meet some sock monkeys from other parts of the world. What African country is #58 from? That vest and hat on #59 are really dapper.
Any chance that #57 has a samosa recipe she would like to share? I like her nose ring.

Posted 02-21-06 12:07 PM Thank you very much Coco.
The African Girl speaks Swahili and says she comes from Tanzania. From the area around Kilimanjaro near the Masai Mara. She loved it there and would like to visit her homeland again one day.
The Indian Girl tells me that she prefers the curry and rice dishes and never learned how to make the many fried dishes from her native land. Her humblest apologies.
And I think, despite his tough image, you made #59 blush.

Posted 02-21-06 04:26 PM I guess it's better not to mess with frying food when you are made of cotton socks, so you don't get any of those little oil splatter stains. We had Chai tea this morning with our breakfast and put her picture up so she could join us virtually. Chai tea and Coco Puffs really hits the spot for me.

Whoopsie.... 'scuse me. That was a good breakfast.
Our girl was making some North African sock monkeys, but she's still looking for little monkey sized tagines.

Posted 02-26-06 11:11 PM Tamara,
You are an amazing Monkey maker! I hope someday to be as good as you. I'm getting better. I made a knee sock monkey too, they are fun to make, but it was a huge challage for me to stuff those long legs and tails. I am not very good at making faces, my noses look funny, and I make the eyebrows sometimes too high, and the monkeys look mad or angry. I want them to look sweet. Some things about making Monkeys are just left up to the Great Grandma. Thanks for letting us see your Babies!

Posted 02-27-06 06:39 AM Hello, all! Tamara, you're an inspiration.
It'd been kind of a quiet spell the last several weeks, but last weekend I got the monkeys "converted" for their trip to Platte City in a few days.
For the twin girls:

(Thanks for the neat felt, Annie!)
For the little boy:

I did something with these three I've never done before:

Ha! Kind of cracks me up.
I've also made a couple of new critters since then.
I've been wondering what to do with this blue bathrobe I've had on hand for a year now. (Sleazy Hugh's a tough act to follow!) This guy just wants to be comfy after coming in from the beach:

I think some of the exotic flavors of recent monkey posts influenced this one:

Be well!

Posted 02-28-06 07:17 PM Thank you, Kathy! You are very kind.
I really, really like these critters of yours:

Sock monkeys have been very good to and for me... I enjoy sharing them.
One of my permanent monkey children, Het, spent the afternoon sunning himself in my boss's window.
(Monkeys have magic powers. And carte blanche to go practically anywhere.)
It's been Spring here the last two days. How is it where you are?

Posted 02-28-06 09:56 PM It's been spring here too! But more snow comming. I like the snow. Have you made a monkey with thigh high socks? might be kinda fun, I saw a pare on line, and you can get them on ebay,,red and white stripes! I don't know if I could get the stuffing all the way down the legs. It would be fun to try!

I never really thought of them as faux vintage till very recently.
I received a very cool commission to make a replica or stand-in for a vintage Sock Monkey.
This very nice and talented artist that wrote a children’s book featuring her paintings of a sweet old Sock Monkey wanted a new little brother to take with her to readings and signings because her Sock Monkey is about 70 years old.
This is her book

I looked for vintage buttons to match the ones on Monkey Made of Sockies, but I couldn't find any that looked anything like his.
So, I made the eyes/buttons from polymer clay.
