always you and the red butt,Foofie!

(Ahem) I am a non-monkey red-heeler (I don't know if there is a proper name for us)

The red part on me is partially covered by my luxurious mane. and is actually the back of my head.

So you are saying they are made with red heel socks but they use the TOE instead of the HEEL for the mouth?

fascinating!!

my mouth is made by the toe of my sock!...so i feel a bit of kindredship...

I will bring this to the girl for investigation.

Foofie, thank you for reminding me to check the 200 book! There are a couple of these type of monkeys in the book.

I've also found some cream mouthed sock monkeys available for adoption on the world wide web. A local antique shop has 2 that I keep looking at, but I just haven't made up my mind about.

Thanks guys,
My children all had sock monkeys made by their grandma. My youngest took his everywhere, but had a bad habit of swing it by its tail. There were many tail repairs. Anyway I have 3 grandchildren & wanted to keep the tradition going. So thanks again.

Hi, Mr. Troll.

Questions about sock monkey patterns and such should definitely be directed to the monkey maker threads. We try not to start too many threads on the Red Heel Message Board, so I deleted your Minimonkey thread. You can direct your queries to the monkey maker threads in the future if you have technical questions. With a name like yours, message boards admins get nervous...

thanks and welcome.

Help!

Does anyone have a sock monkey clothing pattern? I'm looking for a collar shirt, particularly a bowling type shirt.

I am supposed to unveil our teams's dressed sock monkey at our bowling banquet next month and I don't know how to make a bowling style shirt.

It is really frustrating finding decent monkey clothes patterns on the internet.

I am notoriously bad at dressing my monkeys in clothes I make myself.

Um...maybe go to a thrifty store and see if there are any monkey sized doll shirts and study them for the pattern.

Working in miniature is always a pain(for me)...when dealing with little lapels and collars and whatnot.

I do know that American Girl doll clothes patterns are approximately monkey-sized...so you might wanna look for an American Girl shirt pattern.

Another suggestion would be to perhaps experiment in making the shirt out of felt..it's cheap, forgiving, and you don't have to worry about hems...you could even do a sorta "false front" sorta shirt where the pocket, buttons, and other details are sorta appliqued.

These are just my brain storms..wish I could be of more help.
If I ever get really organised I am gonna have a special section on my web site with helpful comprehensive monkey clothes patterns...I am amazed that one doesn't already exist.

Hello, fellow sock monkey friends, I have a question for you.

Recently welcomed to my home were two new "sock monkeys". After conversing with them for a while, it is clear that they have categorized themselves as Sockosimians, but now they've gotten me all confused. See, when I purchased them, I naturally assumed, as they did, that they were sock monkeys, but after a while, I began to ponder: does a monkey made from socks (with white paws and feet), but no "red heel mouth", get to be considered a sock monkey?

I don't want to shun them from our social clan... they do have red stitched mouths with yarn, and I'd hate to tell them that they're "different from the rest of us", just because they're missing that signiature red heel. Any advice? Are they still "sock monkeys" or are they just "monkeys made from socks"? Please clarify this with us, as it has our whole group talking.

Sincerely,

Simply Stitched Sock Monkeys of Michigan (SSSMM)

Hi! I'm Wayland, a human. To me, all monkeys made of socks and who-more or less-are formed similar to the Rockford SMs, are Sock Monkeys. This includes factory sock monkeys, who are not made of socks, but from sock material-they have red mouths, but not red butts. All the stripey and dark brown and purple and pink and red and gray monkeys made from who knows what sort of socks are Sock Monkeys, IMMO (In My Monkey Opinion).

Others may feel differently.

Thanks, Quite the Dude! You can have your computer back now.

It's all so confusing is'nt it? When I started making sock monkeys, I ordered some red heel socks, made a lot of monkeys, then came to realize some "purist" believe a true scok monkey is made with a vintage sock. These are socks actually made in Rockford, I'm not sure how long ago. You can find the vintage socks if you watch ebay. My sweet little Red Marie even got rejected on a monkey model shoot because she was not vintage.
We know this for a fact, any hand made monkey will be unique, no matter how hard you try. Even if you make every monkey the same, they will still each have an individual personality. This never fails, and is the magic of the Scok Monkey.
The fact is, they are all sock monkeys, with the basic same heritage. Made by love for someone who is loved, and the technique was passed down from generation to generation. I love them all, I have monkeys made from vintage socks, non vintage socks, just pretty socks, some made with thigh high socks that makes their arms and legs very very long, and tiny newborn socks, that make tender soft little babies, and great gifts for newborn humans. Sometimes I even put a sqeaker inside. It's a beautiful creative folk art that we all conect with. And the Monkeys are so happy we makers just keep making them. The Monkeys themselves are rarely snobby about what kind of monkeys they are. they don't see the skins, only the heart. They are a community that accepts everyone. So get your needles out, and any pare of socks that you want, and join the passion everyone has on this site for our dear friends the sock monkeys. There are some amazing monkey makers on these boards that will answer any questions you may have about how to make sock monkeys. Once you make your first monkey, your life will never be the same.

Here is a link that shows some of the sock monkey's I have made in the past. There are other craft items I have made on this site, most of the monkeys are in the last few pages.

Your query is fascinating.

In the same way that one would never claim that chimpanzees, orang-utans, gorillas, baboons and tamarins are not all primates (though, obviously, not all of them are "monkeys"), obviously your white armed stitched mouthed monkeys are indeed monkeys made from socks, and thereby linguistically it would be folly not to call them "sock monkeys".

Whille we have previously only entertained the simple species classification "sockosimian" in our past categorization of the "sock monkey" perhaps it is coming time for us to further break down this into a genus/species structure with subcategories and other classifications, if only for the sake of clarification.

while Mrs. Tiffany would be a

SOCKOSIMIAN ROCKFORDIUS

Overly, for example, could become a

SOCKOSIMIAN FOXRIVERIAN MODERNUS

judging from your description, a very quick diagnosis of the sockosimians in question would thus be:

SOCKOSIMIAN CANADOLL

I hope this has clarified the situation for all and I apologize for not getting back to your query earlier.

Thank you Waylon and Kathy for keeping the discussion alive and interesting.

You are, indeed, a brave new world - a curious and conceivably a new stage in our evolution!

In theory, you may be a SOCKOSIMIUS POST MODERNUS HYBRIDIUM.
