Posted 08-26-07 03:04 PM Hi
Here at our house, we make sock monkey slide shows to entertain our friends and family. We would like to start making some monkeys that we can pose easily for the pictures, but no one at our monkey residence has ever made a sock monkey before. We got some of those bendy hair rollers to put into the arms and legs, and now we're wondering if we got the right stuff for the stuffing. We got the same batting that goes into quilts. Will that work?
Thanks!

I'm making a glove goat, what do I stuff it with?
And, where do I get the gloves? What brand?

Sorry, didn't see your instructions until after I had posted. So, I really would like to find a pattern for a sock moose or instructions on how to adapt an exhisting pattern to a sock moose. Also I am not a very good seamstress, but I am forced (lacking a machine) to sew my monkeys, etc. by hand. Can you recommend what stitches and types of needles work well for sock monkey making. I have curved needles, but haven't used them yet. I am making monkeys this weekend. I am a complete novice at this. Although my ballerina monkey is very cute, even for a first time creation. Thank you

Posted 10-27-07 11:35 AM Hello and welcome-
Since you've reposted to this thread, I'm going to delete your duplicate question in the earlier thread.
To answer your question, I've never made a moose. There are a lot of books out there on different sock critters. You might check on eBay or other online sellers to see if anyone has one with a moose.
I've never tried to sew a red heel all by hand. I know someone who did and the monkey didn't hold up well. The gauge of the knit is kind of wide so you would have to make really tiny stitches and probably double stitch to get it to hold up. I double stitch the hand sewn parts on monkeys I make.
You might also see if there is an art collective or craft group or collective in your area where you could use a sewing machine for a little bit.

Posted 12-06-07 04:28 PM Hi all -
I was wondering if you could suggest some colorful socks for non-traditional monkeys. I have a friend that is all about color and I think it would be a great surprise.
I am getting ready to attempt my first monkey - he will be a traditional Rockford wearing a New York Yankees cap and shirt. He is a surprise for my brother in law for Christmas.
Growing up my great grandma had sock monkeys EVERYWHERE. My Brother in Law didn't even know what a sock monkey was until he met us. Time to bring him into the fold
Thanks for your time.

Posted 12-07-07 09:43 AM Hi WVUAlesha!
There are some really good Monkey Maker Peeples here that can tell you lots more than I can. I have seen some really colorful munkeys around here so you came to the right place. But they should tell you more because all we have in our house are browny and bluey monks. You can also look on the "Monkey Makers" thread to see some examples of different monkey species.
Your friend,
Sally

Posted 12-17-07 07:03 PM my advice is to be sure each sock is positioned correctly before you start sewing. The first one I made I thought I was making the legs, but I ended up using them as arms because I did not position the red heel correctly for everything to come out the way it should. One sock lies flat, sort of in silhouette, on its side; that one I use to make arms, tail, ears and mouth. The other lies as you would pull it on, with the red heel square in the middle and horizontal. That one becomes the body. Of course, both socks start inside out.
good luck!!!
