yackyjan Welcome to the Red Heel!
Posted 11-01-07 12:11 AM Thanks, Chelle! Here are two more that I finished up today.
There oughta be a law against having this much fun!
Your one with the attitude reminds me of the stiped monkey in the Grand Rose Band video, which I've posted before, but am reposting since we have new peeps and monks here. He's "animation enhanced" to get the expressions and movement.

Posted 11-01-07 10:34 AM Hey, Girl! Thanks for startin' my morning off with a great song/video. That must have taken someone forever to put together. It's soooo cool!
All the monkeys on the ranch gathered round the 'puter to listen. They went a little crazy. Dancin' round the room. It got wilder and wilder. Now, I have to go pull them down from the ceiling fan, the light fixtures, shelves, etc.
It's gonna be an excitin' day here at the ranch...I can tell these things!
Posted 11-01-07 11:24 PM I love this monkey! She is wonderful. And I'm not just saying that because parts of my hair are pink.

Hi-I'm the resident Grandma at Sock Monkey Ranch and I'm tickled pink to have a place to show off my newest creations. Here's one I finished today. Her name is Katy and she's a bit of a punk monk, complete with diamond nose stud.

Posted 11-02-07 05:37 AM Pink hair rocks! The pink-haired monkey and the Pirate Girl are leaving Sock Monkey Ranch tomorrow to go live in Mississippi. We'll miss them, but they will have a wonderful life with Katy and Zella.
Posted 11-02-07 05:12 PM HELP! I really don't know what to do. I've got my first paying customer, who after looking at my finished work, ordered a bigger version of a baby-safe monkey I did last year.
Well, the new one doesn't really look very much like the smaller one - more like the little one's bigger and uglier second country cousin.
I so wanted this monkey to be absolutely fantastic and I'm afraid the buyer is going to be disappointed. I'm not sure if I should try again...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you --

Posted 11-02-07 10:21 PM Chelle - I'm fairly new to monkey makin'. I've only been making them for about a month and I just finished monkey number 11. I've found it hardest when I am creating one with a specific look in mind and harder yet when it's a custom order.
It seems to me that each monkey is unique and you never really know who is going to be "born"...they just emerge as you stitch them together.
I would much rather create a monkey, then sell it as opposed to selling one, then creating it to order.
If it were me, I would probably remake it, saving the other one for sale to someone else. And I'm probably considered weird, but I would pray about it before I got started. It never hurts to get input and direction from someone who's been creating unique individuals for a long time!
Posted 11-03-07 05:45 AM I can never make identical monkeys. It's really tough. They just have their own ideas of what they are going to turn out like.
The only monkey maker I've seen turn out matching monkeys repeatedly is Tamara. She even made a stunt double for the Monkey made of Sockies.

Posted 11-03-07 11:09 AM Hi Chelle- I wouldn't worry about it. We are often much more critical of our own work. I would take a couple of great pictures of the sock monkey you have made. Send them the shots and don't say anything negative about the monkey- be positive. I'm sure it's a great sock monkey. If the customer doesn't like the sock monkey- then you could make another one. But, I bet they will like it.
Oh, and earlier about the 100 kits- I didn't assemble the sock monkeys. I just sew the parts. The kids will make their monkeys.
And last but certainly not least- YackyJan those are some fantastic sock monkeys! I totally love your site too- very creative.

Posted 11-03-07 01:01 PM WOW, Yackjan, thats a really cool site you have, and your monkeys are adorible! I love how all the monkey makers all have a different style of monkey. Tamara is an amazing talent as well. My monkeys never turn out alike either. http://www.flickr.com/photos/59805412@N00/ here's some pictures of my little ones.
I love all monkeys, from, the most primitive ones to the elaborate monkeys with beautiful costumes.
Happy Monkey making everyone!

Posted 11-03-07 07:28 PM Thank you, thank you, thank you for all the advice. I will be making a new one for my customer, but I plan to keep my goofy boy.
Looking at him today, I can see a stonger resemblance. I had a really hard time with the mouth - it's a little crooked and has an odd little pucker at the bottom. He's not just a pretty boy, he has character. And with a night cap, blankie, and warm flannel jammies, I think he will be a great buddy to cuddle with.
We went to Hobby Lobby last night. Wow! What a giant store - I could have spent all day there. But I did find some new monkey skins, sew-on wiggly eyes, and some cute straw hats.
Here's to Saturday and an extra hour's sleep tonite.

Posted 11-03-07 08:41 PM Chelle - Glad you worked it out. I bet the one that didn't seem right to you will quickly become one of your favorites. I went to Hobby Lobby on Thursday...wow!
Kathy & Tamara - Thanks for the kind words and for checking out my site. It means a lot coming from "Pro" monkey-makers like you gals. I spent lots of time looking at all the pics of your monkeys...they are fantastic.
Posted 11-03-07 10:20 PM I would be happy to be like any of you, including you Jan. Your website is just awesome.
I'm just happy to learn sit and learn. You're all very inspiring and I'm glad to be a part of the message board.
I finally learned how to post pics to the message board.

Posted 11-04-07 05:50 PM I'm not a sock monkey, but I'm bursting at the seams! I have just scored a pair of blue red heel Monkey socks. And I did not pay a lot for them. I'm so giddy I could cry! The person I got them from knew how bad I wanted them and gave me a great break on the price. Sorry if it sounds like I'm bragging, I had to share with someone, and my friends that don't understand sock monkeys, think I'm nuts for being so excited about a blue pair of socks! Have a happy day everyone!

Posted 11-04-07 06:00 PM Blue socks? I'm GREEN with envy! I've been scouting Ebay with no luck. You have been blessed...can't wait to see who you create with them.
Here's a few pics of my new monkeys...

And one more of Max sportin' his new black jeans (he got really ticked that I posted his picture half naked!)

Posted 12-02-07 05:11 PM We had a great time at the craft show! Lots of monkeys got some great families to live with. Inspite of the nasty weather, people came. One Monkey fell in love with an American girl doll. She was a model for a clothing line. He fell head over red heal for her. just thought I would share some fun pictures.

Begging your collective pardon for not letting you know that we returned from our evacuation safe and sound. I was helping a bunch of folk who had fared far worse than we did, taking care of their animals and passing out tissues and hugs. I transported many owners with pets to the pet cemetery in Desert Hot Springs and did my best to comfort them. The man who is the caretaker of the cemetery was very nice and helped us bury lots of pets for free. It seemed to help the owners quite a bit to know that they would be able to come and visit their friends any time they wanted.
We had to stay away from home for 8 days. I put all our monkeys in a purple box and took them with us so they stayed safe.
The Raggedys had to go in another box because they kept causing a squabble with the monkeys, I thought they'd get along since they sit on the same shelf. but NO, they refused to be sociable.
The boy has been gone more than he has been home with all the fire fighting, and it has been too lonesome for my taste, kind of fighting a losing battle with the depression monster.
The monkeys you all have been making sure look fine, I had a great time looking at them.
Bye for now,
Grandma Rosebud

Sorry to hear you're having such a rough run, but we're all glad to hear that the Mountain Family came through the fires and evacuation intact. Ginger was worried about Giacomo, although she was trying to be all cool and nonchalant about it.
The girl is back to some sewing a bit, although her ankle is still funky, so she's behind--- as usual!
We hope you're feeling better and the girl does mean to call all the time, but connecting the phone and book she keeps phone numbers in is always kind of a challenge for her.

That is a swell group of sock monkeys you've made there. You must have worked really hard to finish them all. Hope they found nice homes.

monkey ma Welcome to the Red Heel!
Posted 12-09-07 11:41 AM Hi...I am new to the board and have a question. My daughter, the human one - not the monkey one, and I have just started making sock monkeys. I am not sure how firmly to stuff the little guys. Ella, the monkey daughter, is rather big...I keep telling her that she's just big boned...and she's becoming a bit of a bully. Is there an average size for monkeys made from the Red Heel pattern included with the socks?
Thanks, that would help so much. Posts: 3 | Registered: Dec 2007 | Profile | PM | IP Logged
The Girl I run the board!
Posted 12-10-07 03:33 AM It really depends on the size of the socks. I've got sock monkeys ranging from around 12 inches to about 24 inches. Rockfords are made in four sizes these days, so you might be using the XL.

Posted 12-10-07 03:45 AM It's true. That bump from her sprained ankle turned out to be some piece of torn human stuffin' so someone whose not a great grandma is going to be doing some cuttin' and stitchin' after the new year.
I have no idea how this is going to impact the new season of Coco's Closet or our attendance in Rockford, because evidently when humans get mended with needles, they take longer than a sock monkey to recover.

Posted 12-10-07 03:49 AM 'tis true, and Grandma willing, if we can hobble anywhere, some representation of Smonkeytown will hobble into Rockford next Spring.
There is an irony for a sock monkey maker to get cutting and stitching. I'm going to be a lot more sensitive to monkeys when I'm stitching them in the future.
