Posted 12-30-06 07:46 AM Howdy, monkey makin' mommas and poppas.
One nice thing about running away to the Bootheel for a couple of days was the opportunity to make new monkeys.
They're in various stages of completeness... one just needs her dress trimmed and her hair styled. I used an actual doll wig for the first time, which worked out pretty well, and she's got this Ralphy Roo nose that makes me smile. Another monkey has all this brown fur hair and full matching beard- very macho. He's just awaiting his costume. A third is in the works, but it's too early to tell how s/he will finally manifest.
I covered tax year-end at ye ol' development office this week, but now I get a few days proper vacation. (Yeah!) So hopefully I'll get these guys done and posted pretty soon.
What is it about monkey fluff that's so darned soothing, anyway? I forget how addictive that is.
Happy, happy new year to all!

Posted 12-31-06 12:49 PM Hello again...for those who are new on the board and don't know me, I am Olivia from Houston TX...I help run a multi-purposed perfomance and arts space called Super happy Fun Land...for a long time i made monkeys for www.fluff.tv
But six months ago I sorta went a little nuts and left Super Happy Fun Land and ran off to New Orleans...but now I am back.
I have been making monkeys and all kinds of other sock creatures since 2001..when i was little I used to make really awful sock dolls and my grandmother made sock monkeys but I didn't have one because I was scared of monkeys.
I managed to keep making monkeys the whole time I was in New Orleans, but I wasn't able to take pictures of them before I found them new homes...so that was kinda frustrating.
Also it was kinda traumatic for the monkeys to have to be dragged out to the French Quarter every day and sit with me while i street performed...some liked it..some didn't...and Foofie refused to go...because she hates when people ask her if she is for sale.
Luckily some nice people came along and adopted most of them. I left Stinky Joe, the gutter monkey on the stuffed animal shrine on Camp street because he wanted to stay.
I am still not gonna be taking fluff orders for a while...but I am gonna make some that will go on display (for sale) at various places...like Notsuoh which is this crazy local Bohemian art bar that has one of my weirdest monkeys as their mascot.
Also the latest thing is that Flakey scored a dozen pairs of blue red heels.
So far I made 2 and they were christmas presesnts for his nieces...one of them was made in new orleans..i have a picture of them around here somewhere which I will post soonly..ok here they are... guess which one i made here and which one I made in New Orleans

I can't wait to see your new monkey childrens.
I have recently started using doll wigs- they are awesome!(though they can be a bit expensive)
I hope you have a great few days of vacation/rest/monkey making!

I am trying not to be jealous of your blue red heels.
I have yet to win an auction for any of those.
Those are two beautiful monkey girls! I have been wanting to make an upside-downer. I love how yours came out.

Posted 01-01-07 03:07 PM Welcome back Olivia!
Those are some nice looking monkeys. I haven't had any luck getting the bright blue socks either, but I accidently scored some grey ones awhile back and finally got brave enough to cut a pair to make my brother a grey monkey for the holidays. He turned out really cute and chubby. Here he is having a cup of tea with Coco before he caught his flight to his new home.
Does anyone have any idea how old the grey ones are? The mouth is that sort of orange shade.

Posted 01-01-07 03:18 PM We had three new monkeys arrive over the holidays, all quite interesting in their own way. Speaking of wigs, anyone who has met the girl should understand the twilight zone moment when she met this new monkey girl..

And here she is with our other two arrivals. That one in the middle is a snazzy dresser, but has the shortest legs I've ever seen on a full size monkey. The one on the right looks like one of those kit monkeys, but the giver told us they bought it at a big store, not like a handmade crafty place, and the tag says it was all made in China, and although the skin is 100% poly, the fluff is part cotton. Kind of the opposite of a lot of our monkeys. We're still trying to figure out if it was ever a real sock, or just fabric sewn together to look like a sock. It's really light and soft.

Just curious...
Yeah it is crazy about the blue socks that Flakey got
here is the auction link

Posted 01-01-07 05:09 PM Wow, that was a lucky hit. I wouldn't have waited two seconds to buy those if I'd seen it. Last time I saw blue socks on eBay they went for a little under $40 for a three pack. They look like the bright blue, not the grey blue.
My grey lot was written up by one of those auction drop places and you couldn't tell in the pics that they were grey, and they didn't mention it. I still bid a lot for the whole lot, but was surprised to find quite a few grey in the mix.
The store bought monkey does have a red bum, but the white and red section seem to be sewn as an addition over the brown, for both spots. It looks like they loom the red and white circle and stitch it on. The white for the hands and feet are loomed onto the brown though. It's a really bright white, not the ivory of a Rockford. It's still got a lot of handstitched detail and sweet expression. I think a little fashion assistance will help her blend in here.

Posted 01-15-07 08:50 PM Dear Everybuddy,
I know I'm a monkey and not a monkeymaker, but Annie has had to let me take over for her on account she was walking one of their dogs and she got knocked down and bitten and chewed on by some wild type dogs. She got bitten on her ear and her elbow and other parts I can't see. Her hand got hurted too, and she's most sad about that cuz it means she can't make sock monkeys for munce and maybe more munce. She can't drive, she can't go to her job at the pizza place. We are all doing our best to comfort and amuse her and the firefighter guy is doing so much to help, like taking orders from me to type this message.
The pictures of all the monkeys are really nice, she says they all look so happy, and she is all happy to see that Olivia is back and Missus Melnee got a vacation. Annie cried when she got Happy Christmas cards from monkey makers, she was all teary because she was happy.
When she's better, we are going to go to the build a bear store.
I love you monkey makers so much because you all make my Annie smile.
Love, Mikey

Posted 01-16-07 10:31 AM Hey Mikey, please send some love to Annie for us - that had to have been pretty freakin' scary, not to mention painful - I can't even imagine. I'm really sorry she had to go through it. Here's hopin' for a quick recovery.
You know, I got to thinkin' I don't know that I've ever properly introduced myself here, even though me and the monkeys have been posting here for several years. I guess it's because I generally contend that I don't make monkeys but instead they just come to live with me, usually due to Lucius' genealogical efforts.
Well, how about I tell you a possibly fictitious story, in first person, and you can take from it what you want:
After I graduated from law school in 2000, I had no job and my wife had just quit work to go back to school. I was scared. I assumed I would have a good job because I had done well in school, etc, but for whatever reason, it didn't work out. Anyway, that summer, I sold a lot of stuff on ebay, including lots of GI Joes and taxidermy (another story) to pay the bills, but I also spent lots of time doing nothing and being worked up. So, I got a pair of socks and made a sock monkey to ease the stress. I named the sock monkey Lucius M. Monkey.
As a joke, I superimposed a picture of Lucius on some National Geographic pictures to make post cards which I sent to some friends and family, about once a week for a couple months as if Lucius was taking a world vacation (these original postcards are on the website). About this time (december) I did end up getting about the best job I could have wanted, so that's pretty cool. Anyway, then I posted these pics on my web site, and then things kinda got outa control and Lucius was going on every vacation that either I or any family member went on (my dad especially travels a lot and is fearless with monkey pictures). I also like to write, so I started to write Lucius stories and adding pictures to them - sometimes on location, some times not. Then we had our first child (Mox) and of course he needed a monkey! So did our second child (Sprite)! Now I pretty much just make occasional monkeys for new babies of very close friends.
The End.

Posted 01-16-07 01:59 PM Mountain Mike, please give Annie extra hugs. this will speed up the recovery process, as long as they are gentle hugs. The Bull City monks, Wayland, and I are very sad to hear of her terrible experience. We are all sending healing thoughts and prayers to Annie.
I am not yet a monkey maker, although I am a grandma. The extent of my experience is that I attached a mouth to a partially assembled monkey that came my way. However, I have ordered some red heel socks via the internet, and I am ready to see what happens.
To Joel: Thanks for sharing your story. I am relatively new to the board and sometimes have trouble keeping up with which monkeys live with which humans. I loved the Space Pirate Blackstock adventure and hope there will be more installments.

Posted 01-18-07 11:29 PM Geeze! That's awful! Sorry about my belated post i am still not used to hanging out here as much...
I am always telling the Peeple that dogs are NO GOOD.
If a dog lived here I would totally move back to New Orleans.
I am really sorry about you gettin chewed up by a dog.
When i was in New Orleans i refused to go play on the street, but my friends while I was there were constantly complaining about how the dogs were always looking at them and sniffing at them like they wanted to carry them off.
The girl one time got attacked by a dog of these peeple and it wasn't even that bad but it was still pretty bad so it must be reely bad if it is reelly bad. She didn't have to go to a doctor or anything but she is still a little scared of dogs.

Posted 01-22-07 08:17 PM Hiya Monkey Makers,
I just got a challenging/exciting request and could use some ideas.
Don Quijote.
From what I've seen of pictures of him he is pictured in plate armor.
I know Joel has some fantastic armor/weapon making skills and the rest of you are totally creative with costumes.
Ideas for old spanish looking plate armor?
Hope all are well and that Annie especially is feeling better.
Ciao!

Posted 01-23-07 10:35 AM For hugability, I think I'd use silver lame fabric. otherwise I'd cut tin or copper sheeting/flashing but both have lots of sharp edges you would have to sand, etc.
I think you could construct a suitable suit fairly easily, except for maybe the helmet (didn't he wear a shaving basin? Otherwise you'd want a Spanish morion helmet -google for images).
It wouldn't have to be full jousting type plate. You'd just need breast and back plates which you would stitch at the sides and shoulders (sorta like a vest but not cut up the middle) and a helmet. Here's an appropriate pic:
Http://www.newmexicoet.com/NMET_Cor...Monument_11.jpg or like this:
http://www.arms-armor.cz/gallery_wi...anish%20soldier
These are both about right for Spanish 16-17th century.
You could also add tassets (the things hanging in front of his thighs in the second picture) and maybe pauldrons (articulated shoulder pieces) if you really wanted. The Spanish also wore gorgets sometimes which is a collar that goes over the breast plate (google spanish gorget for pics). Here's a pic of a gorget and attached pauldrons although they're not Spanish, you'll get the idea.

Posted 01-23-07 10:56 AM Ok, I'm thinkin' the helmet wouldn't be so hard either: make a skull cap out of lame and then for the Morion, add an asymetrical brim and the comb that goes on top (gotta have a comb). if you do the shaving basin, do the same skull cap and add a brim all the way around with a cut out for someone's neck, like this:
http://www.bada.org/provenart/deale...id=50&a_id=1896
Oh, perfect, here's what I wanted:
http://blog.chinamusical.net/upload...24113831153.jpg
If you feel like you wanted to to more armor on the arms or legs, let me know and I'll come up with appropriate pics.
Oh, and I'd arm him with a lance made out of a dowel rod

Posted 01-30-07 12:17 PM Thanks so much Joel! I knew you'd have ideas.
I haven't decided whether to go with fabric or try and work actual metal.
The Sock Monkey will have duties as an office mascot for a nice gentleman working in the Dominican Republic. I don't think he'll be called upon for much hugging... but one can never really know where a Sock Monkey will end up.
p.s. I've never read the book... so that's why his helmet looks so weird.
