THERE WAS ONLY ONE YEAR WHEN THE PAGEANT WAS ANY GOOD.

Every other time it's been fixed.

Last year they made me give up my crown!

They should have just given up and appointed me Miss Sockford for Life like all the smart monkeys told them to!

Things that are wrong with the Miss Sockford Pageant:

1. I can't win every year.
2. Crummy humans do the judging. No sock monkeys on the committee!
3. Human MC sometimes wears Hawaiian shirts. Sometimes wears sock monkey hats.
4. Questions are too hard! How am I supposed to know such as what are other sock monkeys doing for such as world peace? WHO CARES! Not such as I!
5. I didn't win the first year!
6. They haven't crowned me "Miss Sockford For Life" yet.
7. No Miss Sockford galleries on the wall of Midway Village
8. I didn't win last year!
9. They made me give up the crown to . . . SHUDDER . . . Daisy Marie!
10. Have to get your picture taken with boring Miss Illinois or some nowhere human like that.

I was a contestant at the Miss Rockford Pageant once and it was super big lots of fun! You go there, and they make you do dances and stuff, and you have to answer questions and you have to talk about your clothes sometimes, and you get to stand in front of EVERYBODY and EVERYBODY watches you do your thing. I had so much fun and naturally I lost to Baby Jane because she is so amazing, but I did win Miss Congeiaty which was an honor because Baby Jane won it the contest before.

I wonder, do you have to have home made clothes to enter? Because mine are not. Sharon is very nice, but she does not actually know how to sew. I am lucky I have stayed together!!

I would like to enter, just for the fun of meeting other ladies. Also to hear what other sockosimians are doing to promote world peace.

No you don't have to have homemade clothes. Just ask "Stewart" who won the couture award the year I entered, with his kilt, or quilt or whatever.

There is no bonding time. It's cut throat. Baby Jane's henchmen were intimidating all the contestants. The best place to hear what other contestants are thinking is to watch from the audience.

Hello, every of the body!

Oh my goodness of the graciousness! It is very citing to make plannings for the great Rockford Festivation again!

Hello, Sparky's Mom! I have great pleesings to meet you!

I give the huge encouragements to any of the body who wants to make enterings in the Miss Sockford contestation! I had such the good timings last of the year! You get to make meetings of the other contestants in the special Green Room and that can help you have less the nerves (unless Baby Jane is making pacings in the room, of the course!) and more of the friends! You do not need to make sewings of your own costume! My dress is by Miss Laura Ashley and I made the sayings so! You can do any of the things you have wishings for your talents! The most important of the things is to be your very own self and none the other and you will be fine!

I have such the excitements this week! Missus Mel'nee made decidings at last that we will of the definitely make our goings to the Festivation! She says that we will make takings of Beebe the truck and then the Big Chief train and then a rental car whose name we do not have knowings of yet! We made our reservings and every of the thing!

Wheee!!!! I can hardly keep the anticipations under my hat!

Thank you! Pleese be very happy every of the body peeples!

My People was wondering if the Sock Monkey Festival can ever be scheduled to occur in the summer?

We live in Hawai'i and she don't own ANY winter clothing. So long as the festival occurs while it's all snowery and blowery and cold out she won't be able to go unless she buys herself a whole new wardrobe an' I don't think she wants to do that, judging by the look on her face. She doesn't even own -one- sweater. Well, we just don't need it here!

Summer would be a wonderful time for monkey madness. By the way, did anyone get one of the orange-hued sock monkeys that were available? Dr. Dan even mentioned the new color during his lecture. I wanted one, but they were all gone. They were quite interesting...

The museum has to juggle a lot of other activities around the year. Midway Village is a popular spring and summer wedding spot. Rockford is also a big soccer tournament town so it's difficult to find hotel rooms on spring and summer weekends. They held the first two sock monkey festivals in April, but moved it back to March to avoid other conflicts.

Ooooohhhhh.... We're going to have so much fun.

I was thinking along those same lines, Knitty. I believe that the Museum uses the Sockfest to ring in the spring and get the peeples coming back after their long winter's hibernation.

And Chelle, our Mr. Wayland bought the last yellow-tan monkey. (The last one on display, anyway.) Sharon was in Dr. Dan's lecture and she asked the question about those monkeys. She wishes she had known you were there.

I think it was different this year, we had a lot of bonding time because they kept us all together away from the competition so we couldn't see or hear anything. I got to know Micki, a lovely and talented ballerina who was heckled by Clyde during her performance. She really has a lot of sass and poise!

We didn't even get to watch the kids portion which came first.

Baby Jane's henchmen were not around this year. I think making her co-host was a great idea. She loves the spotlight and it looks good on her.

Did I do the right thing to get my avatar to show? Oh, good.

Hi! I had a wonderful time at the festivalization. Boy O Boy it was fun! Here are some pictures that were taken. We are already planning to come back next year and meet even more monkeys!!!!!

This is the new orange monkey that you have heard about, not yet named but a very friendly sockosimian:

Here's the always fabulous Question Monk. Googlie got to sit in for a few tunes, he was blown away.

Here's the Gingham Scout meeting

Some of the guys: Shrimp N Grits, Sock, Bluey, Jacqueau, Munkadelic, and Overly Norvous

Me, Squishy, and Harriett

A monkey wearing a peeple on his butt (what is up with that?)

The party was so much fun, Sally had to tell Munka and Overly that everyone was leaving. They hadn't stopped talking the whole night. They didn't want to leave. None of us did, but we had to because of daylight savings time, whatever that is.

Then the next day it was the most exciting thing ever. Here's a picture of me and Wayland in the Sockford Pagent contest:

and you will never guess what! I won!! I did a dramatic resussitation of SOCKFEST. It went like this:

S is for my sockosimian friends
O is for Our fun which never ends
C is for the children, girls & boys
K is for the knitting done in Rockford, Illinois

F is for our frivolity when everyone's away.
E is for the endless days of play
S is for the smiles we always bring
T is for our tails they help us swing

Put them all together they spell SOCK FEST
That's the time that I love BEST!

Here is me with a crown on.

Yeow, nice to meet you Mr. Red Monkey.... um.. I mean ... Mr. Sockford 2008!

Looks like the judges really give a LOT of weight to original songs that mention Rockford. Even when Baby Jane stole Gerry's Rockford song in '06, she got the crown.

Stunning use of rick rack on your toe cap Mr. Red. That spells commitment to the rick rack. I admire that quality in a monk.

Nice to see those gingham scout uniforms! I never would have guessed that Samantha Brown and Lil' Dinah aspired to be scouts too. Looks like a few of the regulars scouts from the Red Heel didn't show up for the meeting this year. I don't see Ginghamama Willajean, Fauna, or Rabéla.

I was reading the Rockford newspaper coverage at
http://www.rrstar.com/communities/x688583572

what's up with this "dancing with your sock monkey"?

What about these new orange monkeys?

Congratulations Red Monkey! You were so brave! I would have been too afraid to stand that close to Baby Jane. Thank goodness no one let her hold the microphone.

While I did not get the chance to cut a rug, I did thoroughly enjoy the film festival. I would love to have copies of all the movies submitted. They would be wonderful to watch at home with a big bowl of popcorn.

I thought the orange monkey I saw was quite beautiful. I wish I could have gotten to know her better.

thank you, i didn't know what i was getting into or i prolly wouldn't have said ok. it was really fun tho. all the girl monkeys made a big fuss over me and i was embarrassed, but i liked it.

the films were great! i wish i had copies of them all. i had seen the clip of Good Night with Happy George featuring Mace, Baby Jane, and Gerry, but it looked so much better on the BIG SCREEN. There was also one called Sockzilla featuring a superhero reminiscent of SUPERMONK. And a very funny film about a Paul Julian couple. The lady of the house gets addicted to QVC and some terrible and funny things happen.

Hey, Ginger! I would be glad to be your song writing partner if you can write the music. It might have been beginner's luck, since this is the first thing I ever wrote. I think all the Bull City Monks have retired from competing in the pagent business now. Sandra Dee says she'd still like to be a coach, but no more runway activity.

Hi everybody! We are finally got our pictures from Rockford processed, mainly because we finally found the cord that allows the camera to connect to the computer. Technicians at the Red Heel Monkey Shelter have declared this a miracle.

Despite the absence of some of our good friends who have traditionally been at the Rockford Sock Monkey Madness festival (not the least of whom was Link - you will notice a dip in the quality of our photography this year) we had a great time - we met some great new monkeys from Maryland, had a swell summit, and a really good time!

And, of course, some of the drivers for some of our great monkey friends were around as well - it was so fun to see everybody again.

Most of the action was centralized at the Red Heel Monkey Shelter Rockford Outlet.

GB was working on inventory at the store at home this year, so he had some "interns" selling stuff.

There was the usual:

Magnets and buttons

T shirts

Cards and crafts

and I got to sign lots of books!

There were also a number of Red Heelers who wanted to "graduate" from shelter life for a number of reasons.

Funny Frank, a bed monkey who could never quite "hang" with the heavy bedders at the "Heel", moved in with the Many Monks of Maryland!

It was a time for old friends to reunite. Zippy and Ralphy Roo kept a sharp lookout for Coco and Ginger atop the Red Mall.

They were having such a good time that Ralphy refused to leave - so his "driver" had to sit around forever waiting for the two of them to "finish" celebrating Zippy's birthday. We all know how well waiting for Zippy's birthday to be done goes.

Rockford is always the site of curious sights, and this year was no exception. Aside from the Monkey Maternity ward

the world got its first taste of artist/scientist Shannon Griffin's soon to be world famous GOLF MONKEYS, who enjoy having a . . . well . . . stick . . . up their heels. The Golf Monkeys had a ton of personality and were a lot of fun to talk to. They wanted everyone to know that they are NOT PUPPETS!!!

Also fascinating were these two incredible pieces of ancient sock monkey art. One of the "dealers" at the festival was the daughter of the man who procured the sock monkey pattern for the Nelson Knitting Company, and she had two things she called "needlepoint" that were made for him in something called the 70s. They are the wows.

But the strangest sight to see all weekend long was Barbara Gerry walking around with Waka, author of Sock Monkey Loves You, the Japanese book about sock monkeys. She really knew her stuff, too! She interviewed Reggie, and Loretta, and Me, and Dr. Dan, and had really thought a lot about what makes us sock monkey so special. She even knew about the Great Grandma! Here she is with Reggie and Loretta.

and here's a link to her book.

http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%82%BD%E...05802935&sr=8-1

This year it was all about the Rock and Roll at the festival, so naturally the STAR of the booth was the one and only QUESTION MONK! He threw together a hot pickup band, who rockarolled for hours and hours for the entranced patrons.

So that's the action at the festival front - we'll have reports later this week on the SockoSummit and the Mr./Miss Sockford Pageant.

Holy moly and wow, all those great pictures! I sure wish I could go but darn it if my people isn't REALLY THIN SKINNED like a really old WORN OUT SOCK and needs to stay warm and doesn't have anything to wear for "Rockford" late winters. I don't think she knows what 'snow' even is. I wonder if she'll let me just go by myself in '09?

Hey Question Monk, I have a small piece of aqua blue sock fabric that'd make a traffic stoppin' PATCH for the HUGE HOLE ON YER ARM THERE, buddy.

Just saying.

And anyway I think aqua blue is your color.

Sorry Ralphy Roo and Zippy. I wish I were there for some birthday cake, but got stuck on the coast.

Next year! Maybe I should sign up for Sandra Dee's coaching and Red Monkey's song writing seminars so I can seize the crown in Rockford and continue my goal of world domination as a media superstar. Miss Sockford seems like a great stepping stone to product endorsement deals.
